A Cloudflare Error 1016 occurs when Cloudflare’s edge servers cannot resolve the IP address of the website’s origin web server via upstream DNS.
Common causes
Cloudflare received a request for a proxied domain, but Cloudflare’s internal resolvers were unable to look up the IP address of the origin web server.
This typically happens when:
- An
AorCNAMErecord points to a target host that does not exist or has expired DNS records. - The authoritative DNS servers for your origin server are unreachable or returning DNS
SERVFAIL.
Resolution
If you are not the website owner
The website’s DNS routing is broken. You must wait for the site administrator to fix their origin DNS records.
If you are the website owner
- Log into Cloudflare > DNS.
- Inspect the DNS record for the affected hostname. If it is a
CNAMErecord, verify that the target domain resolves properly in public DNS using a tool likedigornslookup. - Replace broken CNAME records with a direct
Arecord pointing to your origin web server’s static IP address.
